Numerous settlements rich in heritage sites and cultural history stretch back to the time of the foundation of the Hungarian state. The region's intellectual centres are Veszprém and Pápa.

Lake Balaton The Balaton and its surroundings are Hungary's most popular holiday area. Rest and recreation on the shore, historic and cultural heritage, folk traditions, bicycle and water tours, rare natural treasures, gastronomic specialities and spectacular programmes - all of these things are offered by and around the 'Hungarian sea'.

Southern Great Plain (3)
Southern Great Plain Although the great river is not the only landscape-shaping force around here, the Southern Great Plain is definitely the land of the Tisza. The river is not a dividing line but rather the common thread of three larger areas: the settlements of Bács-Kiskun, Békés, and Csongrád Counties. 1,365,000 people live in the 42 cities and 211 villages of this region that covers one fifth of Hungary.

Southern Trans-danubia (16)
Southern Transdanubia Land as flat as a pancake is punctuated by gentle slopes and rolling hills in this area stretching from the Balaton to the Dráva and between the Danube and Zalaapát. Most of this region can be described as a 'land of hills divided by a thousand valleys'. The area's Mediterranean character and climate becomes more accentuated on the southern slopes of the hills. This is especially true in the hills of the Mecsek and Villány. The mood of this landscape has swept along both poets and painters over the centuries. Varied and somewhat bizarre formations of the Western Mecsek have developed above Kővágószőlős. Of the many caves formed in the dolomite limestone, the largest is the Abaliget Cave. Interesting karst formations also developed on the surface.

Western Trans-danubia (9)
Western Trans-danubia Made up of three counties, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Vas and Zala, this famous wine-producing region is also abundant in thermal water. Especially noteworthy natural assets are Lake Fertő/Neusiedlersee, part of World Heritage, and the Fertő-Hanság National Park.
